Overview Of Activity

The desert above gives nothing away just cracked earth and heat shimmer. Then you reach a narrow slit in the rock, climb down the first ladder and the temperature drops as the light changes color. Sandstone walls swirl in amber, rose and burnt orange above your head, sculpted by thousands of years of flash floods squeezing through the same crack in the earth. Lower Antelope Canyon is longer and narrower than its more famous sibling, Upper Antelope Canyon which means more ladders, tighter squeezes, and, for many photographers and adventure travelers, a more rewarding walk. Your Navajo guide leads the way, pointing out formations shaped like feathers, flames and animals, while sharing the canyon’s cultural significance to the Navajo Nation on whose land it sits.

Your experience

You’ll meet your Navajo guide near Page, Arizona, then walk to the canyon entrance and begin your descent. Ladders take you below the desert floor into a corridor barely wide enough for two people to pass. Your guide sets the pace, points out the best photo spots and light windows and shares stories passed down through Navajo generations. Compared to Upper Antelope Canyon’s flat, single-file walk, this is a hands-on, slightly more physical adventure and most visitors say that’s exactly what makes it memorable.

Operating Hours

Tours operate daily with multiple departure times, roughly every 30 minutes during peak season. Standard tours run about 1 hour in the canyon; the full-day Las Vegas package runs up to 13 hours door to door. Tours operate on Arizona local time (Arizona does not observe daylight saving time, so double-check your time conversion if you’re arriving from Nevada or Utah in summer).

Physical Requirements This is a moderately active walking tour involving several ladders, narrow passageways, and uneven sandstone footing. Not suitable for pregnant guests or anyone unable to climb ladders or manage tight spaces. No wheelchairs or strollers permitted. Children are welcome, but most operators recommend an adult stay close to any child on the ladders.

Not Allowed No tripods, monopods, selfie sticks, hiking sticks, drones or professional/commercial video equipment. Handheld photography with phones and cameras is welcome. Do not touch or lean on the canyon walls the sandstone is fragile.

Important Tips

Wear closed-toe, sturdy shoes sandals are not recommended given the ladders.
Restrooms are available at the check-in area but not inside the canyon, so go before you descend.
Cash is recommended for guide gratuity, typically $3–5 USD per person.
Book midday slots (around 10:30 AM–1:30 PM) if photography is your priority that’s when the most light reaches the canyon floor.
